Pro’s and Con’s: Towable RV’s

Travel Trailers

General Statistics

- Options, options, options!
- Sleeping capacity: 10
- MSRP price range: $8,000-$65,000

Pro’s

1.- Towing is easy and does not require anything beyond a hitch and horsepower.
2.- A lower profile and only one interior level.
3.- Travel trailers cost less than RV’s with motors.
4.- Because you use a vehicle to tow, travel trailers can be left at a site, leaving you free to explore.

Con’s

1.- Steering travel trailers can be a chore. Braking and sway cause some owners difficulty. Before considering one of these, be sure you have an appropriate vehicle for the job.
2.- Hitching can be tricky.
3.- While moving, no one is allowed in the trailer.
4.- A low profile makes driving easier.

Fifth Wheels

General Statistics

- Lots of space with dual-level
- Sleeping capacity: 6
- MSRP price range: $13,000-$100,000

Pro’s

1.- The gooseneck reduces the overall length of the trailer in fifth wheels.
2.- Because of the mounted hitch in the bed of the truck, fifth wheels are more stable and have less sway than travel trailers.
3.- Some owners prefer split-level plans with slide outs, expanding the size of the living quarters.

Con’s

1.- The higher profile makes driving more adventurous. In strong wind drivers report they can get blown around, especially on the highway.
2.- You have to have a truck to pull these. No van or SUV will do.

Toy Haulers

General Statistics

- Lots of space to haul motorized vehicles (even a Mini Cooper)
- Sleeping capacity: 8
- MSRP price range: $21,000-$58,000

Pro’s

1.- Imagine exploring the country’s snowmobile or ATV trails in the comfort of your own moving home. With toy haulers, owners can enjoy the convenience of a travel trailer with the utility of a mobile garage.
2.- These are perfect for hunters, racing fans, motor enthusiasts, and work wonderfully as mobile offices.

Con’s

1.- Because you are hauling around a garage, space is limited. However, many models still provide ample space while giving thrill-seekers room for their hobby of choice. Newer options include side-out floor plans which considerably expand living space.
2.- As with fifth wheels and conventional travel trailers, strong winds and braking can be challenging. Make sure your vehicle is capable of hauling the size trailer you ultimately purchase.
