Are Lightweight Travel Trailers Worth Buying?

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Occasionally, we get asked if lightweight travel trailers are worth buying. Generally, the questions come from people new to RVs and under the impression bigger is better. While bigger is better in many situations, this is not one of them.

Lightweight Means Easy to Drive
The biggest benefit of getting a smaller RV is they are easier to drive. Fifth wheels are great if you know how to tow. However, they take up more room on the road and are a bit harder to squeeze through narrow campsites. If you are not familiar with backing a large RV up, then reverse parking a fifth wheel can be a pain.

However, the smaller and lighter weight trailers are easy to pull and park. They are narrower and shorter, making them easy to squeeze through narrow campgrounds. Plus, if have experience renting a trailer to move, then you have plenty of experience to drive off with these trailers.

Smaller Means Quicker
When you have a large RV, you cannot just pack up and leave on a whim. Not all parks have space for full size RVs. It takes a little bit of planning to make sure you can go. Additionally, you need a special car to pull these. Generally, it requires a full size truck or SUV to take these big boys for a ride.

However, when you have a lightweight trailer, a standard sedan can tow it. In addition, any campsite that takes RVs will have a spot for yours. You can always park a travel trailer in a full size spot but you can’t park a full size in a travel trailer spot. This cuts your planning time down to how fast can you pack.

As you can tell, we are fans of lightweight travel trailers. We like the big boys too but there is nothing wrong with the little guys as well. Come down and see for yourself and you just might fall in love with the travel trailer as well.
