Do you like the idea of owning a travel trailer? Have you rented a few RVs and decided this is the lifestyle for you? Is the only thing holding you back the price of a brand new travel trailer? If you answered yes to any of these, then you should look into buying a used recreational vehicle.
Get More Vehicle for Your Money
Buying used means you can get more for your money. A brand new RV will lose approximately 30% of its value when it leaves the lot. However, used RVs maintain their value remarkably well.
For about the same price as buying a new smaller RV, you can find a furnished travel trailer. All you need is a bit of patience and a little knowhow.
Where to Find Used Recreational Vehicles
Your best bet to finding a good RV is on a lot. You may be surprised to hear that lots will sell used travel trailers, fifth wheels, toy haulers, and all kinds of motor homes for the owners. So you are not really buying the vehicle from the lot, but you are actually buying from the owner.
Dealers call this selling on consignment. They do all the work for the owner in hopes of selling them a new RV. They want the owner to sell the trailer, so they can make another commission when the owner buys from them. This means you can look at several trailers all in one place.
Before You Purchase a Used RV
If you are buying a used RV from a lot (even a consignment lot), you are likely to get a warranty and help with financing. However, when you buy from an individual, most likely you will buy as is and will have to come up with your own financing.
In either case, you need to check over the motor home carefully. Check out the water, electrical, motor and even check the Carfax. Once everything checks out, you can drive off knowing you got a good travel trailer for a good price.
