Save Fuel Costs from Breaking Your Vacation Budget

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

Most people already know traveling by RV reduces both the cost of a trip and our carbon footprint. In fact, it remains the most cost-effective, greenest way to travel. But even with these savings, fuel can add up to a large portion of your vacation budget. What can you do to both save money and lessen the effects of gas consumption on the environment?

- Consider not going so far away. Going Rving doesn’t have to mean a 300 mile trek into the mountains. Why not look for local resorts that offer the same experience without the trip?
- Many of today’s RV resorts offer pools, playgrounds, activities, hiking trails, and even live entertainment. Parks like Beaudry’s RV Resort is a destination in itself. Try staying at places which offer a more inclusive experience to minimize travel.
- Before setting off, clean out the extra stuff that piled up during the last trip. Wait to fill up the water tanks until you get to the resort in an effort to lighten your load. On the way home, dump your holding tanks at the site before you leave.
- Keep your RV running correctly by following the recommended maintenance from the manufacturer. Schedule tune-ups, check the alignment, and monitor the tire pressure. These little touches can mean big payoff at the pump.
- Try using the cruise control set at 55 and not 65. Nothing saves fuel like slowing down.
- When planning your schedule, consider leaving during the off-peak traffic times. Leaving Friday afternoon may mean idling in traffic and wasting fuel. During the summer, try traveling when it’s cooler and you’ll need the air-conditioning less.
Here are a few other things to remember even as you cringe at the pump:
- Even when fuel prices were at their highest, traveling by RV was still cheaper than any other means.
- We’d have to triple our current fuel costs for RVing to become more expensive than other forms of travel for a family of four.
- Owning an RV is proven to increase health and create long-lasting memories for the entire family. So enjoy!
